New research reveals that people who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if something activating and you become ravenous," said a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
